Burner blowing black smoke

Alkota machine, 12 volt burner. Heater works but blows black smoke randomly. Whether the machine is running or in bypass it still does it.
What could it be?
I did a search and most burner problems are usually that they aren't working. I know black smoke isn't good but don't know what it could be.
I would appreciate any help guys.
Thanks.

Check the air bands and make sure they are open and adjusted properly. If you still have smoke in bypass it may be cycling on and off with the flow or pressure switch (leaking/weeping line on the pressure side) and turning th burner on and off. Check fuel filter and fuel pressure as well.

Thanks Paul.....how do I do all of that? Lol
My p.r. valve was leaking and I tightened it up, I think my gun might be leaking though. I have a pressure switch, not a flow type.

**Update**
Ok I ran it tonight and the black smoke was steady, not random. Then the heat temp was low. I noticed that when I tampered with the pressure switch everything worked fine.
I rigged some string to tighten the pressure switch up and tied it to the frame and it works fine now.
My problem seems to be that the pressure switch is loose from the fitting it's attached to.
Can this be fixed or do I just need to replace it?
Thanks.

It's probably time to replace it.

The screws that hold it on to the fitting are probably gone, fell out from vibration or whatever. You may be able to replace them but I wild get a new one incase it is damaged.

With the black smoke check the adjustments on the air bands first, the set screw may have loosened up and allowed them to open or close. You can turn them open or close to adjust the fuel air mixture untill it burns clean. If there is excessive soot build up on the coil you may have to clean the outside of the coil to allow for proper air flow before making the adjustment. The original problem may have been caused by the air bands but if they are still locked firm it may be related to a fuel issue so you would want to change your fuel filter as well.
