Last night I received a call from a customer who wanted their house washed. The customer gave me a long story about financial issues, currently they are trying to sell their home and it looks as though they are looking at a short sale. The customer then explained they had previously hired another contractor who received money for gas, did about an hour's worth of work and advised the customer to find someone else without returning the money.

Customer advised me that a realtor had referred me. That is awesome. It means that either my marketing has paid off, or a previous customer has recommended me to the realtor. Either way, I am happy. Knowing that a realtor is a good way to get customers, I want to do a good job.

Today I arrived for the estimate with equipment ready. Because of the financial woes of my customer, and the fact that I want this job to show the realtor I do good work I decided to reduce my normal price. I reduced it substantially. I figured, if I could make the home shine and the customer is able to avoid a short sale that would help my karma. No problem.

Fast forward a bit as I am working the customer advises they are leaving and asked if they could pay me. Sure, I have no problem taking the money before the job is done. Out of curiosity, I ask where they were going at which point customer advised they were going for a tattoo appointment. Customer described the type of tattoo they were getting and believe me, it will be expensive. On top of that, customer pulls out an Iphone 5 to show me some of the work of the artist.

F you customer, F you. I felt bad because of your potential short sale, and the fact that you got taken by another pressure washer (turns out it was her ex-boyfriend) I reduced my price and took it on the chin. You have enough money to get a tattoo and have a fancy Iphone 5, but you can't make ends meet on your house. Because of you, I am less likely to give discounts to those who deserve it.

It took every ounce of reserve in my system not to want to punch whatever poor soul happened to cross my path today. I am telling you, I would have kicked a 3 legged puppy if it looked at me funny (disclaimer: I love dogs, and would never kick one)

I know what you're feeling. One of my customers owns about 80 rental properties. Many of them are on a "section 8" program which Basically has our tax dollars subsidizing the tenants monthly rent. Seems like those guys squawk the loudest about me not doing a good job, or messing up their car, or bleaching out clothes that were on their porch... None of which is true of course. They are just trying to milk money out of me for a job they are not even paying for while living in a house they are not even paying for. I have absolutely no use for classless trash or anybody who won't get off their sorry butts and work for a living!

At least now you know never to reduce your price. Even if you got the job poor people are going to network with other poor people so it's doubtful that it leads to any additional work for you

These people know how to work the system and have probably been doing it their whole lives. I run into these types every now and then and always stick to my prices.

Good Advice Guy i just need to start following it.I am a sucker for a sad story i am going to focus more on price than bs in the future. It will be my new years resolution.

Dont it blow your mind how guys in section 8 housing have nothing to do but complain? We did one and this guy I know lives there and about 2 weeks later he was tellin me how poor the job was and somthing about killing a plant....untill he found out we did it then was like hey it was really good and all the neighbors were happy. Idleness....

I have been seeing homeless people around here with a i phone 4 or even the new 5.

People that are that broke will either do it themselves or leave it dirty. If I am flat out hurting financially the last thing I would be worried about is cleaning my driveway. They have the $$... They just dont want to do it themselves or pay. I stopped falling for the Boo Hoo's a long time ago.

Impound Guy: Total impound fees come to $3496, plus $35 for the tow
Joe Dirt: Daaannng, that's more than I paid for the car!
Impound guy: Interesting. Do you want it or not?
Joe Dirt: Well, yeah, but, alls I got is like $450 bucks.
Impound Guy: This is a business, not a charity. Maybe one day when Unicef gets into the impound business.....but unitl then...we're the people to see.
