Are Last-Minute Booking Sites Actually Worth the Stress?

My partner and I usually plan our European city breaks months in advance, but we have an unexpected long weekend coming up next month. Has anyone tried those travel agencies or booking sites that specialize in last-minute flights? Is the potential savings worth the lack of choice, or should we just stick to booking direct with the airlines like we usually do?

I've used last-minute sites a few times when I just wanted to get away. It's fine if you aren't picky about flight times. We ended up leaving at 4 AM once for a trip to Prague. It was cheap, but we were too tired to do anything on the first day.

We tried booking a last-minute flight to Rome for our anniversary last year through an agency. The price looked good initially, but by the time we added bags, it wasn't much cheaper. I did read some Ovago reviews while looking around for different options, as there are so many of these companies now. The booking process itself was straightforward enough with the company we ended up using, but our return flight had a four-hour layover we hadn't noticed. It's definitely a different experience than planning everything out ahead of time.
