Another one of those "Outta site outta mind" jobs

Matt the thing looks like it has not been cleaned in about a year by anyone.. If it was cleaned by a IKECA member then shame on them for not doing a good job.. As I tell my buddy all the time All of the companies out there that do a half ass job will eventually get caught...It will be a good day for those of us that still clean the right way. Then maybe the vent hood cleaning market prices will be able to increase.

I have came accross cleaning companies like this except they aren't certified by any certifying authority. However, their business card says "Certified Member of the NFPA" I have bid several Exhaust Systems that they are cleaning but never gotten one. I think I know why, I bid this job $1500.00
it had 20+ filters a 18' horizontal run with about 3" of grease that is just oozing out of the duct and falling into the filters and runing down the fire wall. My bid included two access panels. The owner thought we were crazy and wanted to prove it so he whipped out the invoice and showed us what he is paying. $275.00. Since we were not going to get the job I fired off a few pointed questions.

Do you think you will be able to afford that Lexus when your restaurant goes up in smoke?

Do you think the Fire Marshal's investigation will be in your favor?

How soon after a fire do you think your restaurant will be back in operation with that much grease in the duct?

Do you think your landlord or insurance company will hold you liable for fire damage and neglect of proper maintenace?

His response was "no and he would take information & education and find someone cheaper who do it like you".

I guess he got me there, didn't see that coming. The last I heard he did get someone even cheaper than the $275.00 it's amazing!

I think in order to compete we need a new set of hood stickers that identify exactly what the owner has paid for Hood Cleaning or Kitchen Exhaust Cleaning.

We bid 'em high because of the quality work we do. And that is why we sleep so well. zzzzzzz....zzzzzzz......zzzzzz

There arent many of those guys around, but if a restaurant can find them, they better treat them right.

Amen to that, Brother John!!

Wise words David Lee. I may have to quote you some day. :D

I guess being a member of IKECA is not a guarantee of good thorough work.
There will always be low ballers, fly by night guys and just plain losers.

I have some photos I shot today that I'll post tomorrow...they are just as good or maybe better that the ones on this thread.

Yes I tried to impress him with the knowledge I gained through Delco's school of Exhaust Cleaning and PWI back then when all this happened. I was fairly fresh out of school. No I didn't learn how to fire off questions like that from Delco they are a professional organization. Unlike me that particular night, I quess it was the redneck in me that reared it's ugly head, I could barely understand his english and I spent 17 years in Asia Pacific. I'm sure sometimes you get a little hot under the colar after crawling through, up and down, over and around inside the area above the hood. Document your findings and explain in detailed lamen terms to help justify the estimates high price tag. He insisted we drink beer with him while I tabulated the estimate and kept asking me to call him Charlie (he was Vietnamese). I took this as a good sign we had his attention. So I explain what needs to be done to ensure all contaminates can be removed from the system and I give an estimate in how many hours it will take and why access panels need to be installed and how superior our service is compared to what we've seen of his current cleaning company that does not have the skill or knowledge, if they did they would have already taken care of the issues or atleast brought it to his attention through their CYA documentation.

After going through all that he has the audacity to tell me he would take information and find someone cheaper.

Bottom line folks: for the non-incorporated Mom & Pop Ops is give me my hood sticker and invoice: lowest bidder wins the race.

If only Sam Kinnison had been a better shot back in Danang.

I find the same mindset in large corporate restaurant chains. Probably even more often than the ma & pops.
