Hi all,

As the title indicates, I'm brand new to the business and have a couple of small gigs lined up. One is a vinyl siding job (small house) that is basically just to wash and brighten up.....from reading this post, sounds like soap and bleach will do the trick for that. The other is a complete deck restoration. The deck is currently stained and they want to remove the stain and use Deckscapes from Sherwin Williams to reseal. I want to use caution because I'm not great with wood yet....don't want to screw up a deck. What steps should I take to do this job and what chemicals should I use? There is vegetation around the deck so I plan on wetting and covering that. Thanks to everyone for all the posts so far as I've learned a bunch already.

Thanks for the help,

Mark Mangolas

The house sounds like a great job to start with. You almost can't go wrong with vinyl.

However, that deck is a different story. Depending on what is currently on the deck, you may not be able to remove it completely.........or at least not as easily as you would like to.

Do you know exactly what is on the deck right now? If you can identify it, you stand a better chance of removing it. In cases where I am not sure if I can get it all off, I educate the customer that they may not be able to remove it all, and start over. You may have to reapply a similar product, although it could be a different color.

I am not familiar with Deckscapes from sherwin williams.........are they semi transparent?

The old stain is Behr and it's pretty faded in most areas. The only areas that aren't faded are the picket rails.

Thanks,

Mark

I use a product by the name of HD80 for Behr - no matter how old. Then I neutalize with an oxalic acid - I spray on the acid and do not rinse.

Go up to the "Search" button at the top and read away - You will learn all you want. If you have any questions from your reading - ask away.

Remember - Let your chemicals do the work, not pressure.

Hey Magnolas,

I'm in Germantown Maryland, let me know if you'd like to hook up sometime and chat. I would also be happy to have you work with us sometime if you would like to work with an experianced company for practice. I would also recomend taking the pwna wood restoration classes.
