Alright, another PW problem

Can you tell the weather has cooled off here and it's maintenance time?

Got a 16hp Vanguard that runs fine with open wand, but bogs down as you increase pressure with the variable wand almost to the point of stalling.

Took out all the unnecessary plumbing and it still does the same thing with a direct input hose w/ 6 gpm coming in and a direct pressure line out with no unloader.

It starts easy and runs like a top otherwise.

I'm not too familiar with the Vanguard engines. At the carb there is a nipple coming out the front with nothing hooked to it. I don't know if something is missing there or not. I'll post a pic of that in a second.

Any ideas?

Okay cheapskate, go buy some new ones. There is a reason that one was fouled.

Each time I have the same problem, I buy 2 new spark plugs, gap them and install them and the problem is gone.

Some of the electrode and the other part was worn off so just cleaning them would not shorten the gap or make them work better.

I'll try the spark plugs. I hope that's it. Even if the motor is bad I will still come out ok. This is a backup machine.

I'll never forget when I first met Ron and Tim, his sales guy, was setting up to do a demo at a gas station. The hose reel swivel was leaking and Ron sent him back to get another trailer because he didn't want to give a demo with a leaking machine. Tim was back with an entirely different, perfectly clean machine in 30 minutes, just in time for the demo.

I like backups!

Drain fuel tank into a clear jug if possible. I would be willing to bet you have either water in the fuel or the ethanol has separated from the fuel and is in bottom of the tank. Either way, the fuel will be really cloudy looking when you pour it in the jug. Give it 10-15 mins if its cloudy and you will see it separated with the water or ethanol in the bottom of the jug. Usually the gas left on top is fine.

Its very hard in my area to find fuel without the 10% ethanol, but if you can find it try and run that always esp. in these small engines!

I have had the same problem you described happen to me for the last 2 years and that was my problem 4 times with 2 different machines. We have one local station that I know of within 50 miles of me that sells non ethanol fuel. Also every time it has happened, it has been in the fall. I dont know if maybe the fuel companies are switching to the "winter blend" of fuels or what but it happened twice last fall and twice so far this fall. Also I have a generator that it has happened to.

Reason I say it may be the ethanol separating is because every time I have drained the gas off the top and whats left smells almost like rubbing alcohol and also it burns much slower than gas (alcohol does also)

Yes,,,, if not the head on one side is toast

Sounds like you're not getting enough (good) fuel under load! But if that doesn't seem to be it, pull the plug on the oil fill. Put your finger over the hole and start her up. There should be light suction. Test it w/ and w/o load. If it blows out, you gotta problem. If it blows out hard, you've gotta big problem!
