A little assistance if you would with a SEO case study.

A partner and I are attempting to make a SEO case study by combining our resources and methods. As such, we have probably picked the most difficult thing that we could do to test on and that is to rank a forum. This is a brand new forum a little over 30 days old and has absolutely nothing to do with cleaning or pressure washing so we will not compete at all.

The forum is a fishing forum and the hardest part besides the ranking for the keywords that we have chosen is getting initial sign ups and a little content. Not to mention the ranking of a new site can be difficult in itself. I know that a lot of you, myself included, love to fish.

How you can help with this is by signing up and posting a couple of comments. We only need about 100 posts to get us started and any help would be appreciated.

The main thing on this is that if we can rank a forum for these difficult keywords they we can rank anything in time. You can put links in your signatures also if you want to, I don't care. No it is not the end all be all for SEO power but it is another link.

After this is all done, we are going to put together a package and offer it to all that participate and a steep discount. I will also be making periodic updates as to the status of the keyword ranking along the way.

The site is Best Fishing Forum.com

Thanks in advance guys and gals. If you have any ideas on improving the forum, let me know that also.

I'm not trying to be a thorn in the side but hoping to get SEO from back links that aren't relevant to your website can actually hurt you more than it can help I thought? If I'm wrong correct me please but I've always understood that any back links on forums and blogs etc should be relevant to the content on your website?

They don't help as much as from a relevant site does but they do count and every little bit helps. A relevant site may carry a link weight of a 1 while a non relevant site may carry a weight of .1 but they all add up over time. It only hurts you if you link from what is considered to be a bad neighborhood.

But that is not what this is about at all. This is about testing a system to get sites to rank in a highly competitive arena. If you don't want a link you don't have to put one there at all. For me this site is more of a hobby, that is one of the reasons that we chose it for the test. Not to mention the difficulty factor for ranking the site.

1. The site is new
2. The site is a forum
3. The competition is off the scale

We are going up against sites that are 10 years old or better while this one is just over a month. Some of these sites are also corporate sites that have a lot more bullets in their gun than we do. I want to see if the two of us can beat them. Then maybe they will hire us... LOL Check out the competition we will be going against, do a search for "fishing lures" and you will find BassPro, TackleDirect, lurenet, tacklewarehouse, rapala, bassassassin, amazon and others all on the first page. If this works like it is on other sites in less competitive niches then we have a winning system for moving sites up in the SERPs.

If you want a link that is fine, if you don't want a link that is fine too, it is all up to you. I watch this one really carefully, I just banned the 4th user today for spamming. Real easy to tell when they are writing in Russian and the post is full of links.

Besides, it is nice to get away from pressure washing forums once in a while.

I dont think Pat is looking for backlinks to PWing sites. Trust me when Pat likes you, google LOVES your website. Making Pat happy= phone ringing off the hook. With that being said, I dont fish :) But Pat is building another website for me this month, so I am required by contract to say nice things about him.

I'm in!

Yes, agreed. I have the same contractual terms, and the contract has paid off handsomely. Highly recommed Pat if you need some SEO or website work done.
