2 for 1 special on Home owners with no clue!!!

I talked to one of the homeowners we gave a quote to for cleaning and sealing their pavers. My price was$1200 and he said it was more than he expected. I asked what he thought it was worth. He said to be honest it does not mean I am going to hire, but I was thinking $800. I said let me be honest. My products alone would cost over $600 because you want good work and a warranty. You also expressed concern that there must not be any debris from polymeric sand or chems allowed to go into your pool. Then I have to pay workers salaries, pay insurance, taxes and gas? I told him that he may find someone cheaper or in his price, but it will not be the quality of products and with a warranty like mine. I will not do his work if he calls back, but it felt good to give the guy the reason of why I charge more than the guy who is borrowing his Mom and Dads station wagon with sawhorses on top of it lol.

Now second person.

The other guy who wanted his deck cleaned. Damaris,(My Wife) called and he did not get the price. He was cocky and said just give it to me on the phone. She said $225 and he got cocky and said for $60 I will just rent a Home Depot Power washer and do it myself. She said you told me you already tried that and ruined your deck. She then told him that when he gets finished it will look like a cats scratching post and to jog on after he got more arrogant.

I went there to look at the project. The guy looked like he was trying to write his name with the neighbors power washer he borrowed. The Wife told me that every 2 years they wash and clean the horizontal parts of the deck and stain, but only wash and stain the vertical stuff every 4 years without fail... She was serious :ignore:

Sounds like you need to refine your marketing some more to avoid that type of customer

These were actually sent to me from people they know who I performed work for. I usually am higher than my competition, but I guess my old customers forgot to mention that to these price shoppers. They loved my work, but wanted it to be hack prices. I love the English word NO!. It is so easy and falls off the lips when dealing with this. "Can you do better on price" "NO!"

That is one of many, many, many reasons why I don't do wood restoration, everyone here thinks that they can just pressure wash off the old stain/sealer then buy the cheap stuff from HD or Lowe's and have it all done in a couple hours.

I gave up on trying to educate them on quality work, how long it takes, what is involved, what quality materials cost, etc...... I was just wasting my time and breath as they are only concerned with price.

Maybe if you post a job minimum for wood restoration projects, maybe that will eliminate a lot of the price shoppers.
