1995 7.3

How have the 1995 7.3's held up? If I remember correctly a few years of the 7.3's had problems. Was 95 one of ' em?

I have a 97 with tons of really hard miles on it and its still running. The main difference you will notice in older diesel's is they are not comparable to todays truck. You will not take off as fast, pull a steep hill at low speeds at low rpm's, or fly down the road burning rubber, at least in my case

the new diesels have way way more horsepower and tourqe but the 7.3 is a tried and true engine, I still have one now that has 175k on it.

LOL....Mine lasted 560 another 520 and mine 285 LOL

Only trouble recently was manifold cover leaked. Starters and Glow plug...thats it...

No service on 285 except regular maint and starter....

This is my third one.... Its a Diesel, I'm pretty sure they have all been 7.3

ok thanks for the replies, I must have gotten it confused. I know the 7.3's to be great, I must have remembered bad years of the 6.0 ans gotten it confused. Thanks again

Mine does the same thing on the first startup of the day. After that she cranks up and runs like a champ but at a slower pace as mentioned above. The odometer stopped at 135,000 during an electrical fire and that was several years ago so who knows how many miles it could have on it. For the 1,000 I paid for it and the 800 to change out from a dual mass clutch setup to a solid one I will run it till she dies. Hard to beat a $1800 truck much less one that gets to and fro loaded

Have your injectors looked at. Just saying.

The 95 7.3 is a decent engine. It was the first full year of the powerstroke configuration. There was a couple of years where they did not put in Forged rods, but if you are not going to mod it, there is no reason to be worried, and it wasn't that year, anyways.

Thats a Photo of my olde heap!!!

Scotts got a Shinny brandnew one!!!

Mine has a lil problem now, its hard starting (not the starter) you have to hold the ignition for 10 to 15 seconds before it will crank, I think its either the fuel pump or glow plugs

Russ give this a try, Turn the switch just enough to cycle the plugs (10 secs) turn it back, then turn forward again Just enough for plug cycle ( 10 secs ) then all the way forward to crank, should start right up and give the starter some relief.

Scott, you think its injectors?

I thought maybe the glow plugs or fuel pump or fuel pump solenoid, maybe its not getting enough fuel, acts like its out of gas! When it fires it runs and pulls like a champ.

Russ, when it does start up if it smokes more than it used to till it gets warmed up that's almost always the glow plugs. It's an easy and cheap fix on that engine.

Russ run some seafoam and diesel clean through it like I told you.ULSD is hard on these motors the disel clean will help lube things up and the seafoam will help clean the injectors.
Don't make me come do a service call on the truck....the bill won't be pretty.
ran one can thru and put the second one in yesterday:wacko:

not really smoking Tony but it stinks to high heaven when its first started, would a catalytic converter cause this?

Nope, but injectors will. It only takes one for it to run poorly. Let me guess, you start it and start heading down the road to Waffle House for your all the way hash Browns and Waffles in the morning, and would swear that your transmission is shot. After you go about 3/4 to a mile, it runs like a champ. That is what mine did, until I replaced 3 injectors for $1800...
No Ron, it isn't a shiny new one. It is 4 years old, and has 129,000 miles on it. I just try to keep it clean, waxed and away from employees.

Russ: Truck would not have a catalytic pre 04 I am pretty sure.

The 1995 7.3 is the first full year offered of the redesigned powerstroke engine.
just be aware that it does have a computer and an HPOP. They are two fairly expensive parts. See if any parts have been replaced and if they have receipts. Other than that 400K is not unheard of mileage without any major problems.

Previous to 1995 the 7.3's were the IDI diesel. My 1994 has 345K and still runs, starts and rattles down the road.

Russ
Check your glow plugs. Make sure when you turn the switch on to pre heat the solinoid for the glow plugs is working ( top left of the engine as you face it)
If it is the wring harness for the glow plugs on the 7.3 is notorious for unhooking itself. Check it. If once it cold strts it runs fine it is the glow plugs. If once it is warm still runs roughly it could be two things clogged bad injectors or air in the fuel rail. If you look at the fuel rail at the back there is a plug just like a air chuck loosen it and crank the engine untill it comes out 100 fuel and it will eleiminate any air between the pump and the fuel injectors. ( this will usually only happen if you have run out of fuel and need to reprime and restart the engine)
You can get new ford glow plugs for the 7.3 on ebay for less than 100 dollars a piece now if it looks like they are bad.
