120V vs 12VDC

I got a question about the main differences between the two.

Could somebody tell me the pros and cons between a 12V Hot Water Skid, and a 120V Hot water skid (I know the 120V needs a generator, which has me thinking why anybody would want a 120V in the first place )

I'd appreciate if somebody fills me in :) Thanks!

Most 120 machines have an onboard generator to supply the voltage to your unit. The only drawback is usually a little less PSI on an equal machine, however the benefit is being able to run lights, air compressors, etc

You're going to restart the timeless fued between the 12volters vs the 120's. A search should turn up some info. Unless your going to use the generator, which isn't big enough for much anyway, I dont think its worth it to run another belt, pulley to spin agenerator just to power the fan motor?

There is going to be talk of durability. a 12V machine's blower and ignitor are supposedly less durable than a 120V machines I have 4 hot water units and they work well. if the 120 V system goes out you can plug it into a wall outlet and keep on trucking. If a 12V system charging goes down you can hook it up to your truck battery and keep on trucking...
Just go with what you are comfortable.

Just make sure you have at least a 20 amp charging system that will usually eliminate any problems with the 12v systems. Also be sure to get a good deep cycle marine battery this will help also.

Another tip on a 12V system is to put an amp meter on the charging side that way you can tell BEFORE a battery drops below a level it will still fire.

Another reason is that if you run a cold water machine and want to add a hotbox, you'd have to get a 120v. and run a generator. Or convert everything over to 12v wich would cost the same as buying a generator in the 1st. place.

This is what Bob at PT told me.

I am really thinking about converting my units over to 120volt burners. I have 2 that are 12v and one thats 110/120v and it never fails however the 12v machines are always giving me problems. One machine in partictular the transformers keep going out for some reason. I will be checking everything over again tonight and getting a load test put on the battery to check it out as well.

If it fails again i will definatly be ordering a 120v SDC burner for this machine.

You will find 120 volt burners to be MUCH more durable.

I would think so because when I was talking with the city electrician about the insulators on the high voltage wires, cracks, dirt, debris, etc... will lessen the benefit of the insulation and cause arcing, flashing and sometimes with enough voltage those insulators can pop or explode.

I have seen some that "flashed" and had to be replaced.

This is a lot more voltage and amperage but same principle.

I would bet that the cracked insulator is a problem in itself.

Do you have any problems with the battery holding a charge?

The battery checked out fine. I called Beckett and they said that they test them out at 10volts so unless the voltage drops below that they should operate fine, however he said that heat will cause them to go bad as well as High Voltage. I plan on pulling the coil once more, re-insulating it with new insulation and having a new plate welded in next week and rebuilding the burner from the ground up. I will take a can of gas and a few hoses over to a local Vendor that will get his opportunity to impress me with something other than his high profit margins :D
