Take the work

For those of you who pay a percentage of the work, you are having to let them know how much you are making, unless they do not realize they are paid a % of the gross. Have you ever had any employees start a company after learning from you and attempt to take your business?

It's as simple as educating them about your costs and risks. Most people are just looking for a job and don't have the proper mindset or drive to succeed beyond what is readily available to them. It's much easier and secure to work for someone else. I'd say some of the best cleaning companies I know have owners that realized they were capable of making better money working for themselves instead of someone else. It happens in every industry, some make it some dont.

I have a partner who doesn't put much back into the buisness. I pay him a smaller percentage. Probably higher than what he deserves. No matter how much I try to get him more invovled than just being at the jobs he doesn't take that extra step. He may be better off just being an employee than a partner. If we go this way I will still pay him a percentage, just a smaller one. Which will be better for him by not having to worry about putting it back into the company.

I pay hourly until I get a very good employee that is really wanting to work, wants to make more money and can do every task without being told what to do each and every time, you know, someone that learns. hahaha.

I have found a few good helpers that did ok but for the most part, the guys I have found just want a paycheck, not be part of a team or business.

I think the commission will work great but only with people with the correct mindset that will help you grow your business.

The topic of paying employees, once you transition from a 1 man crew to 2-3 men crews, has always had lots of discussion.

Some proclaim that paying a percentage of the job with incentive bonuses each month works best for them.

Others pay an hourly wage.

In the years of experience that this board has in running and operating multi-crews cleaning hoods, what has worked best in your experience?

Why does Rusty not have a signature anymore?

how do you get away with that?

Do they all carry their own insurance?

I have thought about this but been very skeptical about the AUDIT. Been there and done that on my personal side before and could not imagine the headache of one on my business

They would have their own insurance, EIN, and equipment. They would also need to set their own hours and schedule their own work in some form or another. If you violate any of those conditions you will fail your audit, and lose mucho deniro.

Happy Birthday Rusty

Thanks Ron. Have clicked over another trip around the Sun, and it has been good.

Thanks for all that you do for this industry, this bulletin board is a labor of love, and I appreciate all that you do to keep the conversations going.

I was looking at my sign up date and it's been a decade since I first started posting.

Can I have a job Brian?
I pay my employees a salary ( 1000-1300gross )for a 5 day week roughly 7:30 - 5 plus full health benifits including dental.

We have a great HMO health plan, 30 copay, no hospital charges for stays, a 50 ER co pay and $15 perscriptions. Our dental covers 2 free cleanings and they have to pay the first 50 of the first visit, after that the dental is free up to 1500 per year.

Our business is seasonal and I pay the insurance even when we are closed. I find that the loyalty I get is invaluable and can always count on my guys to do A+ work and treat the customer right.

Since going to this system I have 0 turn over and my highly trained and professional employees return every season.

Each guy operates his own vehicle and is on his own all day. Our goal is 0 complaints and perfect work and we almost always obtain it.
