JL Pressure Washing
What are you doing to get work? What are you doing to grow your company?

A lot of you know me out here, I was the Future Pressure Washing King of Myrtle Beach, then the Condo King and now as Ron calls me the King..LOL
Well you ever get just tired of always looking for work, trying everything you can, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. We all can't be Ron Musgraves, doing 10 things at once and still having your business growing

You know I was sort of pi*sing and moaning a lot the past 6-18 months and was fighting against a lot of things, just like everyone else to keep my biz going and growing. 2009 was the first year in 9+ years that my biz didnt grow, really bothered me quite a a bit. I was close to 30K down from the year before. I can attribute it to many things, the economy, my being involved in the UAMCC etc etc

Well the economy affected a lot of things and it sort of pi*sed me off, HOA's managers all of a sudden looking for lower pricing, just because they knew they could get lower pricing (heck prices are to low around here anytime). You got newbies coming in at half price, not even knowing how to do the condo work, hacks at half price or lower, screwing up properties one year and disappearing the next year and then a whole new group of newbies and hacks coming in. You got established companies lowering their prices because they are scared or don't have as much work. Instead of 3, 4 or 5 companies going after condos, now you got 10, 15, 20 companies going after the work, man its been endless the past 18-30 months

2009 I was busy with trying to help the UAMCC, going to round tables and it took a lot of time out of my schedule.Plus I just figured I had a good base and did a little advertising, but I just wasnt focused on my business like I should of been. but I was also tired, just plain tired of always having to do something, so I slacked some, did about a 5th of my marketing and some of my marketing was getting old
I'm not one to be happy with just getting by or being stagnant, but I was tired of the grind some. Well after seeing my numbers down last year, I said I can't have this. So I put everything else aside, the RT's, the UAMCC and mostly the economy. Well guess what my business is growing again, heck I'm still tired but I work through that
I changed game plans, some things are working, some things arent and some things just arent getting done, but I am focused on growth and if you don't try somethings new you will never know if they will work or not

So the Myrtle Beach area isnt what it used to be, hey its still 90% of my work for now, but I have expanded out and doing a decent amount of marketing and work outside the Myrtle Beach area
I hired my nephew as a sort of office manager, good but not great idea. He's in Charleston and my office is Myrtle Beach doesnt work perfect and he is going to probably get axed or cut down to about 10-15 hours a week by the end of the year as i will be looking for a local person to hire. You do what you got to do for your company
I am focused thou, see what I have to do and I am doing it. My contact list went from about 40-60 to over 900. But now as i see how things are working and not working I am trimming that 900 down and going after what works best for me, there's a lot of things i am doing, can't tell you everything or I would have to kill you LOL. But I am focused on everything

You all know this is a pretty good business, man spraying water for $100, $200 an hour aint chump change.

I absolutely love being my own boss.. do you? Well I woke up at 1:30 am and was doing proposals, emailing my nephew with things i want done and I needed a breakso I thought I would babble a little on here for a while to give me a break

I just wanted to say, stay FOCUSED everyone, your business is only what you put into it, got a busy day ahead of me and driving out to Virginia tonight to see wifes family going to kick back and enjoy whats most important, my family. Then Come Tuesday back to the grind and focus on growing my biz and how to make it grow. I will tell you, I lost some regular work, good contracts to some lowballers BUT, with being focused on not worrying about that, I got some of the work back by calling and knocking on doors and marketing like crazy ALL my numbers are up and up a lot, not just from 2009, but from my best year of 2008.

Sorry for the long dribble post, just needed a break, 4:47am might go take a quick 20 minute nap.

Stay focused everyone, don't worry about the economy, don't worry about the newbies and hacks, don't worry about nothing...STAY FOCUSED and moving forwad, try new things, don't wait for it to come to you, go get it>>>>>there's always ways to do it better.
Everyone have a great weekend

JL, the Future King of Kings :crazy_pilot: Got to love this biz and my Xjet too

Great information Jeff, Thanks.

This year is turning out slowly to be a very good year (when the net-30 checks finally start arriving and I get paid that is) then I get to be caught up with so many bills and finally have some money in the bank for the future and for getting some equipment that will help my business grow some more.

I have done a lot of things and listened to all you guys that have been in the business a long time, went to a ton of Round Tables and listened and took a lot of notes. I got some good ideas on marketing and selling and have done some of them.

I looked into different aspects of pressure cleaning and a few other things that I had bought equipment for a while back but did not have the time to get into but recently had a great opportunity to get into them for a project and it is turning out to be a great investment for that equipment when I bought it years ago and it is working out good right now.

With the help of Ron M., lots of talking with you guys and the Round Tables, I won a good contract here last year and they just let me know last month that they are re-newing it without putting it out there for bidding because they are very happy with my work, the drivers are very happy and no complaints so that is a good thing.

I am working on another contract and should find out in a few weeks if I get that one (in the bidding stages right now and waiting for the bid packet) but that one would be another great contract that will keep me busy M-F and will need a full-time helper.

Once these checks finally get here from this current project I will get to get caught up on a lot of things and life will get a lot better. This will allow me to get a lot of bills paid, get some equipment that will help my business grow and get to keep some money in the bank.

Sorry that I am not telling what I am doing or what is working here (don't want to educate the lowballers and hacks that will jump in and destroy those markets along with reducing the pricing) but those that I talk to once in a while do know what I am doing.

After all bills get paid, I will be attending the Tampa Round Table to see great friends, learn more and have some fun.

Thanks Everyone!

Jeff, Build relationships and reach out to some that you have lost you might be supprized. Work that CAI group and show them you are still the King! The reason Ron can do what he does is his base or core business is weekly - monthly accounts so he does not have to continue to chase the carrot all the time(he still does though).

Got that covered Kory, been doing it all and like I said biz is growing and growing, but you are correct, you always have to keep reltionships

Have a good 2010

I have been something so simple, but am amazed at how well it has worked. Every week contact a past customer and ask for more work, or try to get back in the door somehow. Contact a current customer and ask for more business (broader scope), a referral (picked up 8 more quarterly restaurants), Contact a potential big fish account, or account you really want for some reason or another (landed 42 locations with environmental reclaim 2x a year) Sweet account.

Man, just keep working never give up or quit. I am in my 5th year and business is up over 50% over last year.

Well my biz has been going down hill since the last 3 years. I went from almost 6 didget salary to a low 5 from one month to the next. The falling economy has affected my area a good amount. 80% of my earnings came from big fleet accounts and private truck Co. now i hardly wash my own truck. The lowballers have taken over the markets. Seems like everyone has gone to buy a PW at HD and started doing fleet washing and buildings.
I have grown tired of the hustling and playing the waiting game with my pay checks. I am going to restructure my bizz and "systemize" it. I will also be getting into another market in PW very soon. I have found 2 great employees and will use them to grow. I am also tired of trying to balance the day and night schedule with my family. some days i only get about 2hrs of sleep sometimes its a "nap" week. I also have another biz that i will pull the plug on bacause its too much work. I will be investing in some new equipment real soon. I will also be advertising alot. I have never spent much time on it. I will be training my guys to the max. But We will grow more this year and be the goto company in our area.

You need to target customers who may not be looking for a contractor and then sell them on why they should pay one. They are less likely to shop prices.

I pulled out my business plan last night. In Jun of 2008 I was at Dec 2008 projected levels and thought I was doing great.

After a massive hit last year lo an behold we are at Dec 2008 levels right now!

My business plans have always been conservative and spot on (after the first one! :indecisive:) so it looks like the "explosion" that should have been hitting about right now is going to be put off till spring of next year.

At least it's stabilized at this point and is paying all the bills.

The stuff I've learned at Roundtables is invaluable. As long as I'm not doing anything too elaborate (speaking wise) the roundtables are a nice relaxing way to get away from the grind for a while.

In the few months since Shelly sold her business she has made up 3/4 of her former income in new sales. If she keeps this up she will double her former income in less than a year.

You're right about getting involved in too much stuff Jeff. These classes I'm teaching take three days class time, but ruin about two weeks worth of sales work. I think my days of doing the classes may be limited.

This has become the most cut throat biz there is!! I cant wait to get out of this state. I am hooking up my boat and heading home to retire, my body is shot and I cant do it much longer anyway. When I am ready I am putting the whole rig up for sale to the highest bidder as i am not taking it or doing this in NY. But I will build a small rig for residential work only and train & hire a guy to do it. lol that should pay for my fuel for the boat.

I came down here in 1993 to semi retire and got into this by accident. Next thing I knew I was traveling all up & down the east coast P/W we did awesome for about 15 yrs. I dont want to kill myself anymore I will leave that up to the young gun's. I have a list of residential customers that is 18 yrs in the making with many repeat customers. If someone takes the whole rig at a decent price I will give you my entire customer base FREE. This would only be good for the Tampa Bay area guy's as it is mostly local, this would include the P/M we have been doing work with for years. While I am still here I will continue to wash but I am no longer motivated to find new work.

I hope everyone has a GREAT Memorial Day Weekend I know I will !!
Also remember what this holiday is all about, Thank A VET !!

I love my Boat.
