Tough access? Get a lift

Always remember to wear the proper safety harness that fits correctly when using any lift. Also make sure you know how to operate all of the controls for the lift you are using before you leave the rental store. Many times paint has covered the controls.

I did a lot of research on this when I first started using lifts.

We don't regularly use them for anything but transportation to the roof. When used in this manner accidents are very rare.

Most of them are the result of failed steel or vehicles impacting the lift on the ground. If memory serves me right there were only two fall fatalities from 1991 to 2007 that weren't caused by one of the two aforementioned causes. And harnesses aren't much help when the whole thing comes crashing down. They weren't even required when used in that manner till 2002.

However, most of you guys are using them as a working platform and this is highly dangerous if you aren't paying attention all the time and if you try to reach too far. A harness is a must in those situations.

In my opinion a belt with movement limiting devices is much safer than a harness that allows one to climb up on the rails. The mere force of a person falling can be enough to cause the boom to fail and if you fall out less. Than 12 feet up you are going to crack your skull with most lanyards.

There has been some progress with this concept over the past couple of years with OSHA looking into that option.
