I recently went through the process of hiring professionals, so I can share what worked for me. First, always ask for references and check their previous work in person if possible. Seeing finished projects gives you a much better idea of quality than photos alone.

When looking at house painters, ask about their experience with prep work, paint brands, and cleanup. Red flags include vague timelines, no written contract, or unwillingness to provide references. For quotes, get at least 2–3 estimates and make sure everything is itemized. Good painters communicate clearly and stick to schedules, which makes a huge difference.
