Stain or Paint: Which Is Better for My Project?

Hello everyone.

I’m planning a DIY project and am torn between two finishing options. I want something durable that still shows off the natural beauty of the wood. I’ve seen arguments for both, but I’m unsure which will be best long-term.

I know paint can cover imperfections and offer a variety of colors, while stain enhances the wood grain and can be easier to maintain. Can anyone share their experience with stain vs paint for indoor furniture?

Which holds up better over time, and what about ease of application?

For indoor furniture, I’d recommend considering your priorities carefully. If you want something durable that highlights the wood’s natural beauty, stain is often ideal because it penetrates the wood and resists peeling or chipping, especially with a protective topcoat. On the other hand, paint covers imperfections and offers a wide range of colors, though it can chip or scratch more easily and touch-ups are noticeable. When weighing stain vs paint, stain usually wins for longevity and low maintenance, while paint is better for bold colors or completely hiding flaws.
