How Long Before it Rains

Just curious.......For the roof cleaners that do not rinse, How much time does it take before SH loses it's potency. How much time should pass before it rains when you would no longer worry about killing plants from the run off?

My rule of thumb is 2-3 days. The sun will most likely deteriorate the active SH on the roof within 1-2 days tops, depending on the weather. The more sun and heat it receives, the faster it deteriorates.

Can also depend on how hard it rains and for how long. If it's a quicky shower it could be a problem. If it's a steady rain it will be diluting the SH and also watering the plants. I've done jobs to "beat the rain" and it pours down shortly after the cleaning ,...and it was never a problem. I remember seeing someone say they rinse the first 5' up from the roof edge to help in case of a shower. I've never done that but found it an interesting idea.

* Working without gutters would no doubt be more worrisome.

The SH quickly looses potency in it's battle with the roof algae, and from evaporation. I have had roofs sit for a week, and then get a 1/2 assed rain harm plants. This is because basically salt is left behind, once the evaporation takes place, and the salt can and will sometimes hurt the plants.
Like Jeff Weible said, it all depends on how MUCH Rain, and how long it falls.

On roofs w/o any gutters, and plants underneath the roof drip line, it is a great idea to do a partial rinse from the ground of at least the bottom 1/3 of the roof, while the tarps are still in place, or while you and your ground man are still there to water the plants off.

Chris just pretty much summed up exactly what I was going to say. We actually started rinsing areas of the roofs that have a lot of shrubs/ plants about 2 years ago. Just a quick lite coat of rinse water. It only takes a few minutes and it's made a huge difference.
