Got The Vista Blues...

I've heard it said before, and up to this point I didn't buy it: Vista is crap!

On Thu. I fired up the Sony Vaio laptop and everything seemed normal until Windows Vista Home Premium started running and the configuring updates screen popped up. After it configs. 9 updates (which seemed like a lot because I always run them as soon as they're available) I get a strange screen telling me that windows cannot continue because of a corrupt file. It instructs me to insert the installation disk & hit enter. Uh, problem #1 my laptop came pre-loaded with everything, NO INSTALLATION DISK! Actually a Sony fault, but that's a whole diffferent story I'll get to in a minute. So I take it to my I.T. guy, he puts a disk in punches a few keys & I'm back in business. I go to log off after using it for a while & I see that it's installing updates (gulp). I immediately start it back up, CONFIGURING UPDATES 1 of 9....ARGGGG. Same story. After a few more battles and crashes I had Vista Ultimate installed with no problems (so far), but now my pre-loaded Sony software (no install disc mind you) is gone. The only reason I got the Sony laptop was the ease of making DVD's with it & my Sony camcorder, plug it in and press 1 buttton. Now I've gotta fight Sony to get some installation discs to run these programs & this Ahab the Arab type informs me that the programs I want back are only compatible with Vista Home Premium. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE FREAKIN' KIDDING ME!!!

Long story short, AVOID the Vista updates unless they're absolutely necessary!

Do not automatically do anything, YOU choose what to do. But I do like vista, you shouldnt have any problems with your camcorder. Everything Ive plugged into vista works the only button I have to push is the ON button. You can easily make and edit DVDs in vista media center.

I have an HP laptop, it took me the better part of a day to get all the crap off of it. I hate manufactures preinstalled crap.

I don't like Vista much either. It took me a day and forever to get it running half way decent. I turned off the auto update. That seemed to help mine. Everytime it updated itself it ran like crap.

I have vista ultimate edition, never had any problems with it except for it a memory hog and runs slow. No matter how fast your computer is, it's still laggy.

I roll with Dell and XP! This team has done wonderfull for me, I still have my computer (Dimention 4400) that I have used for 6 years now! I have only updated the Ram and added a dvd writer. Check this out.. I bought it brand new for 2,300 dollars the week Intell came out with the Pentium 4 processor! But hey it still works and its speedy so I'll keep it! My laptop is newer and is awsome also... .a Dell with XP!

Mine runs fine.

That's what i was saying up until a few days ago! It will happen, believe me.

The camcorder deal isn't going to be too big of an issue hopefully, the Dell XP combo will do what I need after talking it over with my I.T. guru.

As far as the Sony people go, they're mostly idiots. They say Ultimate isn't compatible with my model laptop, wrong a 32 bit OS is a 32 bit system, it works fine on my Vaio it just doesn't have a few programs originally installed we use. Paying $38.99 for a disc that should have came with it is really what gripes my a$$.

I purchased a laptop with vista on it.....Used it 4 1 hour then went thru the process of making the recovery disk all 14 cds.. formatted the HD then installed xp home...

I have a friend that worked in a pawn shop and as far as I know they still dont take computers with vista installed.

laptop crased TWICE !!!!!! Same thing, this time had to get a new hard drive

Vista is a XP on drugs

Vista is same software as XP but with some additions to it ...
Microsoft did it for the first time .... took quite good operating system and trashed it adding tons of not needed stuff.

I just bought new laptop with vista and I was thinking to downgrade it to XP ... but newer laptops hardware may not work well with old XP drivers ....

One tip - turn off all this fancy graphics , animated windows , colorful stuff ... I did it with all my computers ...well it looks like win 98 but works very fast and that's most important to me .

I try Linux about once a year. Ubuntu is just about there. It took me hours to get my all in one network printer to work, when I finally got it to work, not everything on it did. I think next year it should be good enough to work to my liking. My laptop with vista runs fine, no speed issues or otherwise, infinetly more stable than 98.

ya takes a bit to get any os trimmed right. I gave up windows two or so years ago and haven't looked back. My wife still runs Xp and the Older boys are running windows 2000 on the desktop they have. My experience with vista has been to either remove it for people and install xp or 2k, or make it act more like windows xp or 2k. I was able after quite a bit of work to make it behave pretty well. I think the main problem people has is "it's new" and "doesn't work like xp did" out of the box. At any rate, good luck with it all. There's plenty of forums out there that can help with the vista thing.

OH and ONE MORE THING.....i don't think I'd stop the update process totally. Security updates (and YES you need them) come in those. They're pretty important sometimes...

Windows 7 will be released soon. I will stick with XP Pro on all my machines until 7 has been out for at least 18-24 months(that's about how long the new OS's need to get the bugs out) then I will look at it to see if it has any added value for my needs. If there is no great features I will stick with XP.
