Fur

I did a deck today that was 6 years old and has never been stained. I used f18 to clean and f 8 to neutralize. It furred pretty good so I was looking to see if there was another way to get rid of the fur then sanding the whole thing down. Someone said something about a "Osborn brush" or a "Defelter pad". Is that the best way and if so where do I find it.

I'm not a deck guy, but I don't see any damage in your pics. I would just rent a floor sander for a day...Don't go too crazy or your stain will have nothing to cling to!

You can have that sanded with an handheld orbital sander (5" round paper) in like 1-2 hours easy. Defurring pad works well but you need a makita buffer. I wouldn't rent a floor sander for that it doesn't need it

You can make a bigger mess with a floor sander than that. Osbornes & defelters are great but like Charlie said - got to have the beast to run it and if this isn't something you do alot of, not worth it to add it to your toolbox.

Don't use F-18 to clean bare wood it will fur. You made it too strong and left it on to long. Start with a pre-carb if your a Rookie and it won't fur ( old PT). I have a completely different opinion about floor machines. I have a 12, 15 and a 17 inch. Special one for hardwoods and one for soft.

We are just starting to get into wood after sitting down and running the numbers and finding out that we are given thousands of dollars away. I’m willing to buy what I need in order to do the job right and to save time but if just using an orbital sander will work just as good then I will go that route. Can you post a link to this "Beast" you are referring to? Thanks!

Thanks Jim. Yes I’m as green as they come when it comes to wood. I have spent many hours on here and some of the other forum reading about wood lately. I thought I could dilute the f18 down so it would just clean without furring but I guess I added too much and left it on too long like you said. What would be your go to pre-carb?

I don't buy much any more (pre-carbs) but get them from Bob. Someone just had a special running on them ,I think Paul? With wood start your solutions weak and work your way up. Clean what you can control when using chems that can fur ( bleach and sodium hydroxide).

Hi DeJay, I've gotten my buffer (beast) and all buffing equipment from www.deckguide.com

Don't want to steal anything from Pete though since this is his section so you can probably check with sunbrite as well and see if they sell it.
