Blown Engine in Work truck - Not how I wanted to start my week

On monday we started a 37 unit association cleaning including roofs & driveways, on our way home my f350 box truck started smoking and idling funny.

When I stopped at a gas station the engine was spitting oil every where. So I picked up some oil topped her off and prayed that we would make it back to my shop.

Well as we were backing the truck up to the shop it stalled out....tried restarting and POP

Took it to the mechanic and they said the engine was done......6 grand for a new engine!

But shes a hard working truck and deserves the makeover

Happened to us last year with our E250, just couldn't let her go. Great truck, bad motor, bought a remanufactured motor with great warranty and had it dropped in. $4000 and running like a top. If your E350 has the 5.4 motor you should be able to find a remanufactured motor for $3000 or less, $1500 to install...........Just Saying.

Guy, did you get the remanufactured engine from the Dealer (Ford) or go through an auto parts store or somewhere else?

I am always wondering how those engine changes go and the quality of the rebuild/remanufacture.

Thanks.

Actually I got it through an Auto Salvage yard. I was going to buy a used motor, but the guy there said it would be way better to go Reman. 36 month/100,000 mile warranty, can't beat it.

My truck spent almost 3 weeks at the dealer right before memorial day weekend last year getting a brand new crate engine, turbo, egr, egr cooler, oil cooler and a few other things. Total cost was over $15,000 I believe. Luckily for me it only had 44,600 miles on it when it cut loose and it was all under warranty. I had the box van I was fixing to resell at the time so I just used that to work with.

Thanks for the info Guy.

My box truck has the 7.5 460 big block so I think thats why it is so costly, but it also comes 3 year 100,000 mile warranty

Since you have the 7.5L gas engine, I would be calling around to see how much extra it would be for a 7.3L diesel engine and if it's even possible. Just a thought is all.

Switching to a diesel would involve a lot of work, better to just buy a diesel. You have to think of everything from the fuel tank, fuel lines, entire front end would probably need heavier suspension and transmission would need a change as diesel gearing is different then gas. You might have to change the rear diff as well, honestly stick with the gas as any savings going to diesel will take longer the vehicle will last.

I understand the pain of the blown engine first hand as my cummins is in the shop get another engine put in. I barely owned it and treated it like gold with fuel additive and synthetic oil. I was going to do this myself, but I can make too much money working then fooling around with this. Bill with new clutch and fuel pump/filter included is going to be close to $10k. Truck was just my small job truck in which 300 gallons was needed, so I just used the big truck all the time.
