Been doing this a long time now. i have found that the gear drive is much more dependable as a commercial type unit. We put over 2000 hours a year on our machines and the belts always wind up out of adjustment or belts stretching or worse they just disenegrate under extream use.

I for one have been in this position many times, we had 3 units on our rigs with belt drives at any given time, and this has always been a potential down time for me that is just not worth it..

We run 8 gpm gear drive units now with hot boxes, NO Problems. I dont know about the other guys out there, but working on belts in the middle of the night on a hot unit thats just been running a few hours and the belt guard is in the way and real sharp on the edges SUCKS !!

But i would thing that a belt drive unit on a machine that does very little commercial work and does not run 7 or 10 hours a night would be fine, just not for me. My 2 cents

I understand completely, Nick. As a repair shop, we have not seen a lot of gear drives come in. This indicates that they are well-built, but there really aren't a lot of gear drives out there at this time, either. The gear-driven units can still transfer vibration and some heat to the pump, but this is usually not a problem. One Florida manufacturer produces a good number of gear-driven units each year, and they are committed to continuing.

Everybody has their own preferences, and when I was contracting we had nothing but belt-driven machines.

This belt guard is plastic and is easily removed with three LARGE handscrews (easy) which eliminates the hassles you mentioned.

Most belt wear (and failure) is due to misalignment, which is easy to prevent. Although these particular machines are laser-aligned at the factory, I would make it a point to re-check the alignment of any belt regularly. Properly aligned belts will last for years and years without problems.

It is always good to share your experiences so that others can add to their knowledge.
