AR pumps- Worth rebuilding?

I have 2 AR pumps that are inop. One has water in the oil, the other doesnt have water but doesnt work properly told they are both just worn out. Neither have been disassembled. They are connected to honda engines 11 and 13 hp. The pumps are RKV 4G32 and 4G35. My objective on purchasing these broken pressure washers is just to learn how to rebuild the pumps. I figure if I can rebuild these pumps I can rebuild a general or a Cat just as easy.

I know these AR pumps are not the greatest but they are not the worst either. (from lots of reading on this site and others) I see a model EZ4040 on ebay but will probably need to have worn parts replaced soon as well.

I dont want to make a not smart move trying to rebuild these AR and end up spending more then they are worth to have. When I get through fiddling with these I will probably sell them back to the friend I bought them from since he does pressure washing as a business or craiglist if he doesnt want them. He said they last about two years when they are new.

If you can recommend a parts supplier and tell me if the kits on the pdf are sufficent for a rebuild (like is kit 1857 probably complete if the pump seals are just worn and it has no cracks etc)

If it smarter to just toss these pumps and find a couple of generals I will do that. I will still do some surgery just to confirm what makes them tick.

Since I dont have a business I dont have a signature to put into place. I am a computer guy by trade and as a hobby rebuild boats or whever broken ends up in the driveway. I hope to start a business fixing something but have not identified what that something is yet so I fix things I have not worked with. Thanks for any input!

AR is a good pump, if I were to replace one would probably go back to AR. If it's just seals and not pistons, it's definitely worth fixing (if the oil hasn't been milky for long). I can price you the seal kit in the morning.

my guess is the milky one has been that way for a couple of years. I would appreciate the assistance with the parts. I would like to get the high temp seals so he can use it on a hotsy down the road if he wants. If I can fix the one that shows no sign of water in the oil then I will be ahead of the game. It is the 4G35 that has the water. The 32 looks fine so far.

I dont see alot of talk about piston replacement, I think I have only read about 1 on a general. Do these pumps go through pistons often or do they last through a couple of rebuilds? Or is there any method of the madness since it all depends on how they were treated. Thanks for the assist!

Jim I sent you a pm, really liked your video "built this city".

Russ Im sure he took good care of the equipment but he may have let it freeze after they stopped working but Im in austin and we havent had a freeze that lasted more than a couple of days so I am hoping there is no cracks from freezing. Are you going to post the kit info or do you want me to call? You can pm me the info as well. Thanks again

I have used General and AR pumps at different points over the years , I have found both to be good pumps , I look at the AR as the european or Japan sporty small model (good and effecient) and The Generals are like the old muscle cars ! Big bulky with a Big block 454 but will last a lifetime as long as you care for them .

Thanks for the information. Russ was kind enough to set me up with the parts to get the one AR pump rebuilt and a Comet so I am good to go unless I find something else wrong with the Honda engines. Looking forward to seeing how a commercial pressure washer works. Maybe even get something cleaned around the house!

AR makes a good pump, and they're good people to deal with, too. The same is true for General, Udor and Cat. (I guess I'm partial since they're right in my backyard, so-to-speak!) We're a dealer for each one of them.

The thread's not a year old yet, so I'm going to revive it. :D

I have a line on an AR RKV4037 that has Milky Oil Syndrome. Is that terminal? Probably a good idea to replace both the water seals and oil seals while it's disassembled, right? (Not that I'm necessarily going to buy it or try to rebuild it myself, but like Boatguy, I kinda like fixin' stuff.)

Being as a replacement pump is upwards of $369, it might be a good project, as long as the overall end cost doesn't grossly exceed that of a similar pwasher that's more "ready to rock" when it arrives. It has one tip, no wand, and one tire that needs to be reseated on the rim. There could come a time when it involves more time and expense than it's really worth . . .

Whaddya think?

Wow, fast reply, Russ!
The seller says he got it two years ago, and there are maybe 100 hours on the engine. I saw the comments above about freezing, and he claims it's been kept indoors during the winter. He started using it a couple of weeks ago and discovered "the pump had gone on it."
If there's any particular symptoms for the pistons being shot, I can ask him what it did or didn't do when/if he fired it up. If piston replacement is involved, I'll probably take a pass on it. For "free; get it outta my yard," maybe. For $156 (next bid), probably not.
Thanks.

Figuring on the current price (bid), both seal kits (prices I saw on the 'Net), gun, lance (48" zinc), miscellaneous connectors for same, full set of nozzles, a quart of pump oil, and shipping (which is more than the price of the machine), I came up with just under $550. Looks like another hundred bucks or so for a piston kit.

Tempting.

Thanks for your input, Russ.

Russ, I don't know if you can (or want to ;) ) read email at your "company address" on weekends, but I just sent you one from my Yahoo address.

Thanks.
