Tony, The auction deal. What are you saying? You buying a used truck and runn it till it dies and get another one vs. buying new? I have thought along those lines myself, but I hate breakdowns. But I know some of those cheap trucks have lots of life in them yet.

Only have one toy, all my rigs are yellow.

Painted them all yellow years ago.

Do you get an insurance discout for having safety yellow trailers

Years ago I worked for a large industrial painting company in the union and they ran all safety orange trucks, pick ups, lift trucks, tractor trailers, everything was orange. They were out of New York and the owner told me he got an insurance discount, that why all his equipment is painted orange
 
Hey Ron, was the Ranger in Prescott yesterday? There was a white Ranger pulling a rig up the only hill in Prescott.....it was funny stuff. I watched from the roof a hotel while cleaning the exhaust fan.

If it was yours ....the kitchen staff suggest you move up to a man size truck.

I do get a Discount, but thats not why I did it. They actually get hit less...

Almost three years now and both of those auction trucks are still going strong. They are used almost daily. Picked up another truck too for $2600. Chris plans on getting another or maybe even two in November.

I love these fords. In all this time they have had to have new tires, one new water pump, two new fuel pumps and some kind of relay for the air conditioner. I can't think of any other expenses on them but gas and oil.

Miles on them now

1) About 72000
2) About 180000
3) About 235000

All gas, two 5.8's and 1 5.4.

My buddy buys cars from auctions then flips them. He puts some labor and a few bucks into them and makes a decent amount of money.

Today I took my wife's car to the shop to get looked at and a lady was picking up her Volvo station wagon. She said it had 400K miles on it. Her other car (also a Volvo) ONLY had 250K. I used to live in the apartment under my landlord and his family. When I lived there he had two volvos that had 200K and 300K miles on them. Eventually he sold one of them to upgrade to a minivan when his family expanded from wife and kid, to wife, kid, and expecting twins.

I unfortunately financed my truck when I bought it in 2005. Fortunately I was able to pay it down quickly but I made a decision some time ago that I will not be financing another vehicle. I would like to drive it till it dies. If a year from now, I need a new truck I will purchase for whatever I can pay cash for. I will be looking heavily at auctions.
 
I bought a couple of trucks at Ritchie Bros last april. It was not the best experience. I think that with the trucks I bought, I have not had the best experience. I was trying to get trucks for less then $10k. I got them both for less then $10k, and got exactly what I paid for...maybe even less. I had to take one truck right away to get tires, and the other ran fine in the yard, but had a broken wire going to the coil, and was a real trip to drive home from Denver. I drove it because they wanted more then I paid for the trucks, about $4500 to ship the trucks to Phoenix. It was nuts.
 
We have a huge Richie auction here. Trucks are usually from repos and not maintained. I like buying from the county. They have meticulous maintenance from their own shop. Not as many good deals lately because they are keeping their trucks longer.

Here is a real world comparison:

2004 Ford F450 Diesel - used - $42,000 - financed

Payment $680/mo - purchased in 2005 w/29,000 miles - Insurance (commercial $1mil) $320/mo

Over two years - Approx $800 Maintenance + 44 lost days w/ two warranty turbos and a new refurb engine

Fuel consumption about 9 mpg loaded. DIESEL - costs more.

Total two year cost = $24,800 plus 44 lost days at the dealership. (not counting fuel)



1996 Ford F250 - 100k miles or so about $1300 at auction.

Same 1 mil insurance about $200/mo

Over two years - $480 add flatbed + Waterpump/fuel pump/brakes/tires/etc about $1500

Fuel consumption about 8 mpg fully loaded (gas- cheaper)

Total $5680 plus 3 days lost at local repair shop that puts commercial customers at the front of the line.

The difference has purchased two more similar trucks and two used trailer skids for backup.

I will NEVER go back to the myth of buying newer trucks for "reliability" now that I know what I know about the older Ford trucks.

The only way that would ever happen would be if I found myself in Scott Stone's position and needed a lot of trucks FAST.


The most successful lighting company here in Las Vegas drives a huge fleet of 1980's chevy trucks that they keep looking nice. Their competitors can't come close to their pricing with all their expensive new trucks.

It's a trap. Don't fall for it!!!
