Once in a Lifetime

We were leaving from charleston airport on Tuesday night. There was a large military color guard in the lobby with several additional military personel present, some brass and many high ranking NCO's - at least 3 or 4 Sargeant Majors.

The buzz around the terminal that some Medal of Honor winners were coming into the airport to visit the Medal of Honor Center. As we waited for our flight, I asked one of the military what was the deal. He said that there was an American Airlines flight inbound with over 15 Medal of Honor receipients on the plane.

The plane finally arrived (late of course) and they did the water gun deluge over the top of the plane when they pulled into the terminal.

As they deplaned, the NCO incharge called the receiving line to attention and they rendered a salute to the arriving soldiers, as the first soldier walked out of the jetway, everyone in the terminal stood up (several hundred travelers) and started applauding as the remaining soldiers entered.

I mentioned to a guy next to me that I will likely never see this again in my lifetime, He agreed.

That would be a cool experience. They must have been older, because there is not a single medal of honor winner since the Vietnam conflict that survived to receive his award. What I think is really cool is that, no matter the rank, a general will always salute a Medal of Honor winner.

I forgot about that. There is one MOH recipient that is alive from Afghanistan. I just read about him awhile ago.

Stuff like this is what makes you feel so proud of our great country. These men and all our military do so much every day, from the MOH soldiers right down to the ones that keep everything moving, the ones that never see action, they all keep us the strongest country in the WORLD

Wish I was able to see that

I have always thanked military people for serving this country. That was something I always wanted to do. They told me I was to ugly. Honestly it was heart thing.

That would be great if there was a video that could be posted so we could see it.

Our Nation is a proud one. I have met very few people in my life that weren't extremely proud of their military service. My father served in the 4th Marine Division during WWII. Iwo Jima was his first and last battle. Needless to say I have a tender spot for all of our military heroes.

I was going off the official Govt. website. It lists all their citations, and some of them are beyond brave.

The VFW here keeps a good update on who is doing what locally. They keep a running count of awards no matter the area of service. I did not know there was another Meadal of Honor recipient in the works. We should be proud of what our fighting men are doing.

You are correct and in one way I am wrong. The soldier I am referring to has been approved to receive the MOH, It just has not been awarded yet. My bad on that part.

Here is wiki on him.

Your first answer is the right one. on Sept 10 2010 he was accepted to recieve the medal of Honor for his 2007 action. God forbid he passed away tomorrow his Sept 10 date would be his medal of honor date. Thats the way I see it.

His real date was 2007. He is a hero and I hope one day in my lifetime I can meet him.

Matt your are so right about this post. I served in the USN and I've been around some distinguished people including some who were shot up in Vietnam but to my recollection I never had the honor to be in the same room with a Medal of Honor recipient. They are our ultimate hero's.
